Top 5 Worst Show

While there are many, many shows in high regard within the theatre world, there are always bound to be a few flops. When it comes to theatre, a community based almost entirely around audiences and acceptance, these flops go down in a harsh and cruel manner most times. Here is my collection of the Top 5 Worst Shows.

5. Bring Back Birdie
With a hit like Bye Bye Birdie, theatre lovers were thrilled with the announcement of a sequel. After all, there can never be too much of a good thing, right? Wrong. This show relied heavily on the audience knowing the first show and simply wasn't very good. It lasted 4 performances before saying Bye Bye and closing.

4. Carousel
This show follows the love story of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan. This show is a big hit with certain audiences but not with me. I absolutely hate this show and its storyline. I saw the Broadway revival in April of 2018 and was confused with how it played out. The intermission felt like it came out of nowhere and the ending didn't seem like the end. Perhaps the worst part for me is the song "What's the Use of Wonderin'?" The premise for this song is the following: it doesn't matter if your man is a jerk or abusive or an angel, he's your man and you have to stay faithful to him. It's an awful message.

3. Moose Murders
This show followed the popular theme of a "mystery farce." Mystery farces, like Clue, are wildly popular and very enjoyable. Where this show went wrong was, well, existing. With plot points like a son attempting incest with his mother and a "mummified paraplegic" raising from the dead to kick a man dressed as a moose in the balls, it's not surprising that show closed after just 1 performance. The show was so distasteful that one actress actually left the production before it ever opened.

2. Carrie
Taking a famous book like Carrie and turning it into a show is always a tricky move. Unfortunately for this show, it really didn't pan out. The show's out of state previews had issues with the pig's blood scene and not ruining the lead actress' mic. Even after a set accident that almost decapitated Barbara Cook, the show moved to Broadway at the price of $8,000,000 which was very expensive at the time. It lasted 5 performances before doing the right thing and closing.

1. Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark
What could possibly go wrong with turning this beloved comic hero's story into a Broadway musical? The answer: a LOT. There were several accounts of actor injuries and accidents due to the adventurous aspect of swinging like Spider-Man. Beyond that, the book fell flat and the dialogue was corny. I had the opportunity to see this show several years ago and can say that the fight scenes that occurred above the audience were admittedly awesome. Although it was cool to be so close to the action, the show was not good and cannot be overlooked

I honestly had no idea that Spider-Man was ever turned into a show, lol.
